Comparing treatment programs is difficult because the information is not standardized. Two facilities can describe themselves identically and provide very different care. These are the questions that tend to reveal the difference.

About the care itself

  • What level of care are you recommending for me, and why that one?
  • Who conducts the assessment, and how long does it take?
  • What is the staff-to-client ratio, and who is on site overnight?
  • Are psychiatric services available, and how often will I see a prescriber?
  • Can I continue medications I already take?
  • Is there a protocol for medical complications or withdrawal?

About the program day

  • What does a typical day look like, hour by hour?
  • How much of the day is group therapy versus individual therapy?
  • What therapeutic approaches do you use?
  • Is there a family component, and what does it involve?
  • How much time is there outside the schedule?

About money

  • Are you in network with my specific plan — not just my carrier?
  • What is my estimated out-of-pocket cost, in writing?
  • Does this require prior authorization, and who submits it?
  • What happens if insurance stops covering partway through?
  • Are there fees not covered by insurance?

About rules and length

  • What is the expected length of stay, and what happens if I need longer?
  • What are the rules about phones, visitors, and leaving the grounds?
  • What leads to discharge, and what happens if I want to leave early?

About what comes after

  • What does discharge planning involve, and when does it start?
  • How do you coordinate continuing care, including medication follow-up?
  • What is your policy if I need to come back?

Two red flags

First, refusal to put costs in writing. Second, pressure to decide immediately before you have spoken with a clinician or confirmed coverage. Urgency is sometimes clinically legitimate, but it should never prevent you from asking questions.
